Don’t forget our DREAMers

With all the news coming at us all the time, it might be easy to forget that Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) plan in 2017. DACA was an executive branch memorandum passed by President Obama after Congress failed to pass his DREAM Act, which would have provided around 700,000 immigrants who arrived as children with a path to citizenship.

By definition, our DREAMers have done nothing wrong. To qualify for the program, applicants had to demonstrate that they had not committed a felony or serious misdemeanor. In its pointless cruelty, ending DACA is characteristic of the Trump administration. It leaves some of our brightest and most promising young people with uncertain futures.

Before the house right now is H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act of 2019. This is yet another attempt to provide our DREAMers, as well as Deferred Enforced Departure and Temporary Protected Status holders, with the pathway to citizenship they deserve.

Call Speaker Nancy Pelosi and thank her for her remarks on H. R. 6. Tell her that her constituents stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters in support of the passage of this bill.
