A matter of life and death

If you can, read this Twitter thread on conditions at the border. The situation is appalling. A 6yo from India died trying to cross the border. At least six children have died in ICE custody…that we know of. Conditions are dire. Facilities are severely overcrowded, there’s not enough food, and detainees are held in “human dog pounds” and “iceboxes”, which are exactly what they sound like.

If you’re anything like me, you feared Trump’s agenda would lead to fascism in America. It has. The administration plans to hold immigrant children in military bases, including Fort Sill in Oklahoma, once a Japanese internment camp. Humanitarian oversight, already difficult, would become near-impossible.

More and more people will die. Someone has to act. Someone has to hold Trump and his lackeys to account, and that someone is our own Member of Congress, Nancy Pelosi.

Call Speaker Pelosi and use this script:

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from San Francisco.

I’m outraged and appalled by the reports of abuses of detained immigrants, from massive overcrowding to denial of necessary medical care to children. I urge Rep. Nancy Pelosi to demand a robust investigation of immigration enforcement practices and detention conditions, deny additional funding to ICE, and allocate adequate funding to immigration courts to ensure timely processing of asylum applications.

Thank you for your time and attention.

If calling is not your speed, Resistbot is your friend.

For extra credit, here are more resources for practical steps you can take to resist Trump today:

We have a handful left of our sturdy tote bags, manufactured ethically in the USA, bearing the Stand Up San Francisco logo. Tote bags are available at general meetings; pay what you can. Huge thanks to member Laura for design and coordination!
