Tell Pelosi it’s time for reparations

With dire conditions at the border and a President richly deserving impeachment hearings, it’s hard to focus on larger issues. And yet we must. The House is currently considering H.R.40., a bill that would launch a commission to study the most effective way to pay reparations to African-Americans for the ongoing damage inflicted by racist federal policies.

The median wealth of black families is less than a tenth of that of white families. More than a quarter of black families have zero or negative net worth. This racial wealth gap was driven by federal government policies like slavery, red-lining to create discriminatory housing conditions, designing interstate highways to destroy inner-city black neighborhoods, and underfunding predominantly black schools.

The commission proposed by H.R.40 would evaluate the government’s liability and propose financial solutions. In doing so it would begin to address America’s unacknowledged debt to its black citizens.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Nancy Pelosi and ask her to support H.R. 40 to help our nation address its history and current reality of racially discriminatory federal policies. If you’re shy on the phone, don’t forget that using Resistbot is just as effective as making a call.

Here are more resources for practical steps you can take to resist Trump today:

The most important thing

What’s the most important issue in your life? Are you most concerned about keeping your health care, Medicare, and Social Security? Are you most concerned that people of all religions and races are safe from violence? Are you most concerned about climate change?

Whatever your most important issue is, the most important thing you can do right now is to get Democrats to vote, to protect that thing, and everything you hold dear.

Direct contact with voters is the most effective tool we have to ensure Democrats vote, and the more Democrats vote, the more elections we win.

I’ll be phone banking today with Democracy Action, and I’m inviting you to join me.

Our best chance to stop police violence

Good news! Last month, I asked you to tell your Assembly members to support police reform in California. Now, two police reform bills have passed and are on Governor Brown’s desk awaiting his signature. AB 3131 limits police militarization, and SB 1421 would open police misconduct records to the public. Our governor has just one week to sign these bills, and you can help make that happen.

Stand with communities of color who have joined the ACLU and Indivisible to sponsor this critical legislation.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Jerry Brown at 1-833-522-8923 and tell him to sign AB 3131 and SB 1421 into law. You can say Police accountability is crucial to stop violence against Californians of color and protect all of our communities.

Use Resistbot if you prefer.

JUST SIX WEEKS TO TAKE BACK CONGRESS!

We’re ramping up our get-out-the-vote efforts from now through election day. That means we’re temporarily ramping down our MoC office visits. Sign up to canvass or phone bank instead!

Stop the killing

We have a great opportunity now to hold police officers acountable for planting evidence, sexually assaulting, or killing members of the public. We are closer than ever to lifting the veil of police secrecy with Senate Bill 1421. This bill would give the public access to records of police misconduct, including use of deadly force, and it’s up for a vote in the California Assembly this week.

In addition, the Assembly will vote on AB 931, which updates California police’s deadly use of force standard. Under AB 931, police would only be allowed to use deadly force if there were no reasonable alternatives available and if there was an imminent threat to the officer or another person’s safety.

For decades, our communities, especially communities of color, have demanded accountability for police violence. We have the chance to make a real difference by acting now.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Assemblymembers David Chiu and Phil Ting and tell them to support AB 1421 and AB 931 (call scripts).

The GOP’s shell game: immigrants vs. Medicare

Because there are no tactics so abhorrent that Republicans won’t stoop to them, while we are breaking our hearts over their inhumane treatment of immigrants, they are trying to ram through a budget that would cut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. The so-called “A Brighter American Future” budget (can you believe it?) also threatens the Affordable Care Act.

Meanwhile, Trump’s recent executive order will result in mass and indefinite detention of families at the border. The U.S. Navy is already mobilizing to build massive tent cities to imprison immigrants, including here in the Bay Area.

The GOP thinks we can’t pay attention to more than one thing at a time. Show them they’re wrong.

TWO THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call all three MoCs right now and say, I am totally opposed to any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and I urge [MoC] to reject the new Trump Budget. You can also use Resistbot.

While you’re on the phone, thank your MoCs for supporting the Keep Families Together Act (script here).

Extra credit: Call Governor Brown at (916) 445-2841 and tell him to withdraw the California National Guard from the border (script).
