Here’s how to suspend Kavanaugh’s hearings

The news cycle is punishing – that’s on purpose – but try to keep this top of mind: the president’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen pled guilty to 8 criminal counts. He testified that he paid hush money to women on Trump’s behalf, with the goal of influencing the outcome of the 2016 election.

The president is a criminal co-conspirator. He has nominated Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh has argued that a sitting president should not be “distracted” by investigations into his or her crimes. Trump has found a judge that will overlook his treasonous acts.

Under the circumstances, Kavanaugh’s hearings, scheduled for September 4th, need to be suspended.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Some good news for a change: both our Senators sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and ask the Committee to suspend Kavanaugh’s hearings. There’s a great script here. If you’d prefer not to make a call, ResistBot is your friend.

Use your voice, make a difference

This week, the president called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation “right now.” On the face of it, that’s as literal as a case of obstruction of justice gets. Of course, Sarah Huckabee Sanders has already walked the tweet back, saying it was just “his opinion.”

I don’t even know what to tell you. This is no way to run the United States of America.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call all three MoCs and urge them to protect the Mueller investigation.

Think your calls don’t make a difference? Think again. Dianne Feinstein’s deputy state director Sean Elsbernd tells us last Thursday was a historic low for calls received by her San Francisco office. There were only 34. If only half the people reading this email made the calls, we could quintuple that number.

Or use Resistbot to send your message. Texts, faxes and emails all go into the same tally, which our MoCs can use to demonstrate grassroots support for protecting Mueller.

MURKOWSKI IN TAHOE: TELL HER NOT TO CONFIRM KAVANAUGH

We met with Sean on Friday. You can read the full action report here, but the big takeaway is:

Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski will be Nevada Senator Dean Heller’s guest at the 2018 Lake Tahoe Summit in Sand Harbor State Park, Nevada. This event is open to the public, and a Kavanaugh protest there would impact Murkowski in person.

If you can’t get to Nevada, call Murkowski and Maine Senator Susan Collins anyway. They’re under the impression people aren’t as upset about this as they were about the Affordable Care Act. Let’s show them they are wrong.

Keep calling about Kavanaugh

Our representatives tell us that every phone call matters. When the issues are crucial, we can’t stop with just one call. And with extremist Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh being vetted right now, we have to do everything in our power to stop him. That means: keep calling.

Kavanaugh, who suggested that the Supreme Court might have gotten it wrong when it compelled President Richard Nixon to turn over the Watergate tapes, is shaping up to be the worst possible judge for this country, someone who would let the Trump Administration off the hook for its crimes while punishing women, LGBTQ people, and people of color.

Senator Feinstein is doing a great job holding Kavanaugh’s feet to the fire, but she has not said she will vote against him. We need her to make that promise.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Call Senator Feinstein, thank her for her work on slowing down the SCOTUS vote, and tell her she must commit to voting against Kavanaugh. Use Resistbot if you prefer.
